UI UX project 2024 May (School Assignment)
Delightful Read Everywhere
The State Library of Victoria has long been a cornerstone of community knowledge and education, but engaging young children in traditional library activities has become increasingly challenging in the digital age. To address this, I initiated a project aimed at making the library more appealing and approachable for children aged five to thirteen. This initiative includes creating a kid-friendly website, designed to foster a love of reading and transform library visits into exciting adventures.
This project seeks to address is the low reading rates and limited library use among Australian children. In the current digital age, traditional library activities struggle to compete with the instant gratification and interactive nature of digital entertainment. This decline in engagement with libraries can impede the development of essential reading skills and the fostering of a lifelong love of learning. By making the library experience more interactive, engaging, and tailored to the interests and habits of young children, the project aims to revitalize their interest in reading and library use, thereby enhancing their learning environment and supporting the development of their young minds.
The Problem
Empathy Map
HCD model
By using the HCD model to help with the design thinking to make sure the website is tailored to the specific needs and preferences of its kids, making it an effective tool for engaging with the library’s resources.
The landing pages and key elements of the website are designed with vibrant colors to attract young children, who are naturally drawn to visually appealing elements. The overall aesthetic, following the logo, aims to provide a visually interesting and enjoyable experience for children. The illustrations on the landing page depict the dome interior in a child’s drawing style, using crude strokes and a basic color scheme to mimic what children would draw themselves. This approach grabs their attention and makes the library feel familiar and engaging.
The Solution
To make navigation easy and intuitive for children, the website features larger, brightly colored buttons representing the different services offered. These buttons, in four distinct hues, are designed based on research showing that children benefit from clear, colorful, and prominent navigation aids. The typeface is also chosen to be child-friendly, with larger font sizes and informal, fun fonts like Arial and Comic Sans MS, which are preferred over traditional fonts for better readability and engagement.
